Book Review - The Innocent

The Innocent is set in 1100 in England. Elf's mother has just died and her brother is putting Elf in the convent. Elf's brother is getting married and his new bride does not want to raise his five year old sister.

Elf spends nine years in the convent only seeing her brother once. When she is fourteen she is sent to come home and nurse her brother who is believed to be on his deathbed. As she is caring for her brother he suspects his wife is poisoning him and having an affair with her cousin.

On the death of her brother Elf is order by the King to leave the convent, where she was planning on spending her life as a nun, and marry to secure the keep on the border. The King chooses Elf's husband, one of his knights he knows to be loyal to him.

Elf is lucky in the King's choice as the knight is very patient with Elf and desires to have a good marriage. As time progresses, Elf and her new husband fall in love and have a child. However, the King becomes very ill and Elf's husband must travel to assist the future King.

While he is gone, Elf is kidnapped by one of the border raiders. While she is being held captive waiting for her ransom to be paid, Elf discovers the person behind her kidnapping is really her ex sister-in-law. Her brother's widow is bent on revenge for the wrongs she believes Elf has done to her and her real goal is to see Elf dead.

When Elf's husband returns, she is ransomed and returned to her husband and child.

Bertrice Small, the author of The Innocent, has again written a book to capture your heart. It is always amazing how much living Small can have her characters experience in such a short amount of time.

If you enjoy books that not only produce great romance, but also a lot of adventure and experience you will be enthralled by Small's writing.
